While Chell (the vehicle for the player) never says anything, the others (GLaDOS in both games and Weatley in the second) carry the dialogue, something they do with aplomb. Then, there are the characters that populate this world, from the silent protagonist Chell to the humorously murderous GLaDOS and the incompetent but companionable Wheatley. Even in the sequel, the music drives home that this used to be a place of splendor. This is clear when you first see Aperture in ruins and later on when you learn just what happened in this place. From the sterile test chambers to the rusty and dusty areas behind the scenes to the spine-chilling rat dens, you truly feel like a rat in a maze. The music just reinforces that. The atmosphere perfectly encompasses the environment. They are linear in nature, but contain tests that can be solved in multiple ways. The Portal games are tight, compact games.
